Dog muzzles – Which is best for your dog’s nose shape?

dog muzzles

All dogs are different..Long snout dogs, short nose dogs – that’s why we love them! The same applies to their body shape, including their snouts. The key to finding the best (and frankly, safest) fitting dog muzzles for your dog – don’t just rely on the breed guidance on size tables.

Trainers, charities, and veterinarians the world over recommend our Baskerville muzzles and this series is here to help you to find the best option for your unique pooch.

First, you need to ensure you measure your dog’s nose length correctly as this is the most important for safety reasons – it ensures your muzzle will not tip or slip off during wear. If you can take your dog to your local pet store for measurement, even better. If buying online, we would suggest purchasing a couple of options to see what fits best and return the unwanted items.

In any scenario, the muzzle needs to allow your dog to be able to pant and drink, especially if it’s used for daily exercise, groomer visits, or extended periods of wear.

If your dog’s nose shape is either extremely short or extremely long, you will need to take the time for more research to find the best muzzle option. If your dog is between sizes on your first choice of muzzle, you should also take the time to find the best design for your dog rather than compromising.

It’s vital you get this right and you’re not duped by cheap, inferior, and dangerous latex alternatives. Made with Thermoplastic Rubber (TPR) Baskerville muzzles are strong, safe and secure. Fabric or mesh muzzles are also a no-no. Remember; dogs need to be able to pant freely at all times. Fabric muzzles restrict this.

Dog nose types:

Long snout dog nose

You need to start by looking for a muzzle shape that ensures it is the correct length for your dog’s nose. With longer nosed dogs this might mean it is a deeper fit or will have slightly more movement in the fit of the muzzle, but this should not be excessive. Look for specific designs like the Baskerville Anti Scavenge Muzzle which is an excellent long nose dog muzzle and provides a good fit for a long snout dog nose.

Broad noses

Though with broad nosed dogs you are looking for a comfortable, wider fit muzzle, you will still need to ensure the length measurement is right, even if the circumference is slightly compromised. However, your dog MUST be able to open their mouth to pant. Look for specific designs like the Baskerville Wide Fit Muzzle or the Baskerville Ultra Muzzle that can be molded in warm water for a wider fit.

Flat noses

Are a challenge! There are a few specific designs on the market for flat nosed dogs but ensure the design is fit for purpose and for your needs and length of time worn. Your dog needs to be able to breathe and pant freely as flat nose breeds are sometimes at a disadvantage with restricted breathing capacity.

Whatever size dog nose you’re dealing with, finding the best muzzle for your four legged friend doesn’t have to be a challenge. You can find more information about our muzzles available and tips for muzzle training on our blog page.
